Joseph was the 9th of 12 children (7 sons and 5 daughters) born of Lemuel Bartholomew (1791-1868) and the 8th child born of his 2nd wife Anna Barrett (1797-1880). Joseph's siblings were: Guy Earl (1812-1900), Anna (1814-1877), George (1816-1889), Thomas (1819-1879), Clarissa (1821-1901), Polly, (1823-1879), Jerome (b. 1825), Charles (1827-1900), Emma Jane (1833-1852), James (1835-1904), and Sarah (1838-1907)

Joseph married, January 10, 1855, at Dresden (Clemons), Washington County, New York, Saraph M. Snody (1835-1907) by whom he had 2 duaghters: Arabella (1857-1933) and Henrietta (1859-1871).

Civil War: Co. D, 123rd NY Vol. Inf.

Joseph and his brothers Charles and James all married Snody sisters: Saraph, Angeline, and Marion, respectively.
