James was the 11th of 12 children (7 sons and 5 daughters) born of Lemuel Bartholomew (1791-1868) and the 10th child born of his 2nd wife Anna Barrett (1797-1880). James's siblings were: Guy Earl (1812-1900), Anna (1814-1877), George (1816-1889), Thomas (1819-1879), Clarissa (1821-1901), Polly, (1823-1879), Jerome (b. 1825), Charles (1827-1900), Joseph (1829-1906), Emma Jane (1833-1852), and Sarah (1838-1907)

James married Marion Snody (1838-1902) by whom he had 1 son: Clarence E (1862-1863).

James and his brothers Joseph and Charles all married Snody sisters (Marion, Saraph, and Angeline).
