Charles was the 8th of 12 children (7 sons and 5 daughters) born of Lemuel Bartholomew (1791-186) and the ? child born of his 2nd wife Anna Barrett (1797-1880). Charles's siblings were: Guy Earl (1812-1900), Anna (1814-1877), George (1816-1889), Thomas (1819-1879), Clarissa (1821-1901), Polly, (1823-1879), Jerome (b. 1825), Joseph (1829-1906), Emma Jane (1833-1852), James (1835-1904), and Sarah (1838-1907).

Charles married, January 12, 1853, at Dresden (Clemons), Washington County, New York, Angeline Snody (1833-1910) by whom he had 5 chidlren (all girls): Mary F. (1856-1931), Augusta (1857-1858), Angeline (1857-1858), Emma (b. 1860), and Nancy E. (b. 1860).

Charles and his brothers Joseph and James all married Snody sisters: Angeline, Saraph, and Marion, respectively.
