Thomas Crahan was born in County Galway, Ireland, Sept. 23, 1823, and died at his home in Jubilee Township, Peoria County, Illinois, June 27, 1906, aged 83 years, 10 months and 4 days. His death resulted from a complication of diseases due to heart trouble.
When a young man he came to America settling at New York where he remained three years. He was married to Miss Bridget Killeen who all these years has been his faithful helpmate and who survives him. From New York they moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and their their eldest daughter, Kate, was born. From here they came in 1857 to Scotland Prairie, north of Brimfield and located on the Blair farm. From there they moved to Slackwater, Stark County, remaining one year, moving from there to Jubilee Township, where he resided until death.
Seven children were born to them, three of whom preceded him to the better land, Margaret dying in infancy, Mary Ann at the age of seventeen, and Kate, wife of M.J. Dempsey, dying Nov. 5, 1904. Besides his aged wife, three sons and one daughter survive him, namely, John F., Thomas Jr., Matthew and Nellie, wife of John Harty.
His early life was given to hard labor, such as fell to the lot of the pioneers who established their homes in this new country. After moving to Jubilee he engaged in stock raising and farming, in which he was very successful, and by industry and economy became the owner of a fine farm home.
He was a kind and indulgent husband and father, fond of his home, and always ready to assist the unfortunate and needy and lend a helping hand. He was a member of St. Joseph’s church and a good Christian man.
The funeral services were held Saturday morning at St. Joseph’s church, Brimfield, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Mainville, assisted by Rev. James Shannon, of Peoria, and Rev. CP O’Neill of Princeville. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Calvary Cemetery.
The pallbearers were John Day, Alex McDonnell, Lawrence Morrissey, PM Lynch, Frank Finnegan, and Geo. Weatherwax.
