JoAnn Lyss, 78, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Moline, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at "Sunrise on the Scioto" in Columbus.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.

JoAnn was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Malmo, Neb., to Joe and Amelia Thege Vrana. She married Ronald Lyss on June 9, 1956, in Lincoln, Neb.

JoAnn was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University. She was a teacher for rural schools in Nebraska. When she moved to Moline, she was a substitute teacher for the Moline School District. She later worked for the VNA.

JoAnn was a current member of Westside Assembly Church, Davenport, where she played the piano and organ. She was a former member of First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, where she also played piano, and organ and was a member of the hand bell choir. She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and watching birds. She also recorded Christian music with her two sisters.

She is survived by husband, Ronald; daughters, Rhonda (Ed) Flood, Berwyn, Ill., Reva (Robert) Bowker, Ceresco, Neb., Dr. Roger (Elizabeth) Lyss, Gahanna, Ohio, Renee (Mohamed) Kasheer, Columbus; grandchildren, Janea Flood, Keith (Melissa) Flood, E.J. Flood, Matthew Flood, Brian Bowker, Peter Bowker, Lana Bowker, James Bowker, Dan Lyss, Andrew Lyss, Rebecca (Eric) Forbes, Shareef Kasheer, Nezaar Kasheer; great-grandchild, Tristen Flood; sister-in-law, Norma Najim, Springfield, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Ruby Bowker and Mildred Gustafson.
