Part of his early childhood was spent in Saline County. After the death of his father, the family returned to Fillmore County. At the age of twenty-one, he went to Clay County, where he farmed forty-nine years.
He was married September 1, 1914, to Edna Root. To them were born four children, Keith, who died at the age of ten, Fern of Fort Worth, Tex., Mrs. Iris Young of Ulysses and Lyle at home.
Besides his widow and three children, he leaves to mourn his death, his sisters, Mrs. Nell Sanburg of McCool, Mrs. Anna Lee of Fairfield, Mrs. Hattie Engdahl of Ong, Mrs. Cora Lloyd of Lushton; his brothers, Charles Smith of Ong, W. D. Smith of Edgar and J. B. Smith of Wessington Springs, S. D.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Ong Methodist Church with Rev. S. W. Longacre in charge. A double duet sang three songs, "Abide With Me," "Nearer, Still Nearer" and "Under His Wings." The singers were Mrs. Charles Rudd, Mrs. Harry Wight, Mrs. Joe Anderson and Mrs. Will Herrick with Mrs. Ralph McCloughan at the piano.
Burial was in the Ong Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Goesch, Gayle McLaughlin, Elmer Gowen, Forrest Overturf, Wardie Johnson and Mac Blaney.
