Elizabeth H. Broocks was the daughter of Elizabeth A. Morris Broocks and General Travis Green Broocks, first postmaster of San Augustine who came to the region in 1838. During the Córdova Rebellion in 1838, Broocks was Captain of the San Augustine Volunteer Militia. In 1844 President Sam Houston ordered Broocks to Shelby County with 600 men to assist in putting down the Regulator-Moderator War. Broocks quelled the troubles, while he won the title "General."
