May Border was the daughter of George Border(born in England) and Elizabeth Broocks daughter of General Travis Green Broocks, first postmaster of San Augustine who came to the region in 1838. During the Córdova Rebellion in 1838, Broocks was captain of the San Augustine Volunteer Militia. In 1844 President Sam Houston ordered Broocks to Shelby County with 600 men to assist in putting down the Regulator-Moderator War. Broocks quelled the troubles, while he won the title "General." In 1846 he constructed the first brick building in San Augustine. He became a member of the Redland Masonic Lodge No. 3, of which he was senior warden in 1847, worshipful master in 1849, and treasurer in 1855. The Border and Broocks name came to command respect, and the families made many substantial contributions to the business and social life of San Augustine, and elsewhere.
May's father, George Border(from England), settled later in San Augustine, TX. Elizabeth's father and his brother John Border(FAG#64473385) arrived by a ship named the "Great Britain" on 12 Aug 1833 in the New York harbor in America along with the rest of the Border family. Their port of departure was Liverpool.
George Border served in the civil war as an officer, 2nd Lieutenant, and his uncle, John P. Border was a colonel in the civil war.


May siblings included Mattie, George, Lecurgus "Curg", and Cora Border. May Border brother George Fowler Border became quite prominent in OK. He bacame a Doctor and started a hospital that eventually became called the Border-McGregor hospital in Mangum, OK. Dr Border became the mayor in Mangum, OK and in 1932 he was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Will Rogers, the humorist was inducted the same year. This is the highest honor an Oklahoman can receive from the state.

May married Mathew S. POLK of San Augustine, TX around 1888/89. His family seemed related to almost everyone who was anyone in deep east Texas politics, as well as to national figures like President James K. Polk.
May and Mathew had the following children: Edna Jerome(b. 1890 July), Mathew S. Jr.(b. 1891 Oct), Ben Lucias(b. 1893 Jan-d.1981)), Bettie Jo(b.1899-d.1932), Border L.(b.1902-d.1975); all born in San Augustine county TX.

Sometime around 1904/05 they left San Augustine, TX and moved to Mangum, Ok where May's brother was the doctor in town.
