Peter Shaffer Ruth was born in Springfield Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on March 29, 1820, the son of Peter and Mary Magdalena Shaffer Ruth. He married in Bucks County on December 12, 1847, to Lucy Ann Deemer, daughter of Frederick and Catharina Derr Deemer. They were the parents of 6 children: David, Mary Catharine, Isabella, William Franklin (died young), Milton Deemer and Harvey Deemer Ruth. Peter Shaffer Ruth was my g-g-g-grandfather.


From the Death Records at Easton, Northampton County:

"Peter Ruth, age 85 years. Gentleman, married (sic). Born in Williams Township. Died December 13, 1905 in South Bethlehem, of pneumonia, duration of 3 weeks. Buried in Bucks County December 16, 1905."


Obituary for Peter S. Ruth from the Bethlehem Globe Times, December 14, 1905:

"Ruth---In South Bethlehem, Wednesday, December 13, 1905. Peter Ruth, aged 85 years, 8 months and 13 days. The funeral will be held on Saturday morning, December 16, 1905, at 7:30 o'clock, from the residence of the deceased's son-in-law, Cyrus B. Clauser, 712 Ontario Street, and will proceed to Durham, Bucks County, where services will be held and interment made. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral without further notice."

"The funeral for the late Peter Ruth will take place on Saturday morning at 7:30 o'clock from the residence of the deceased's son-in-law, Cyrus B. Clauser, 712 Ontario Street, and will proceed to Durham, Bucks County, where services will be held and interment made."

"The funeral for the late Peter Ruth took place this morning at 7:30 o'clock, from the residence of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. Cyrus B. Clauser, 712 Ontario Street, where short services were held by Rev. J. O. Leibensperger. The cortege proceeded to Durham Church, where services were held by Rev. P. D. Mertz. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining."

"Peter Ruth, a well-known retired farmer, died of consumption at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Cyrus B. Clauser, in South Bethlehem, on Wednesday morning, December 13. He was 85 years of age. Mr. Ruth was born in Springfield Township. His wife died eight years ago. His daughters are Mrs. Clauser, South Bethlehem, and Mrs. Alexander Cressman, Allentown, and his sons are Harvey Ruth, Bursonville; Milton Ruth, Hellertown and David Ruth, Kingston."
