A viewing for family and friends will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.today at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 502 N. 11th St., Payette. Burial services will follow at Rosedale Memorial Gardens, Payette. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Don's life in the church Fellowship Hall following burial. Condolences may be made to the family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel.com. Don was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Fruitland, the oldest of three boys to Mary and Gerry DeBord. His childhood days were full of big family gatherings with his mother's large Fretwell family. He spent a fair amount of time on the farm in Fruitland with his grandparents too. He was a standout athlete in high school, playing basketball and baseball for four years each.

Later in life, he became a golfer and spent many years playing in league and tournaments, as well as playing on courses during travel. In later years, he also did a lot of snowmobiling.

Don worked with his dad, Gerry, in DeBord Construction starting in high school. Together, they built many commercial buildings, schools and civil projects in Idaho and Eastern Oregon. He mentioned many times that "he loved construction work." Family members fondly remembered the process of building the Payette Municipal Swimming Pool as a special project.

Don was a very civic-minded man. He was on the Treasure Valley Community College Foundation from 1976-1977 as a business partner. He was a volunteer fireman and worked on the Payette Chamber of Commerce as a city councilman from 1990-1996. Don was key in the Scotch Pines Golf Course Development, not only the planning but the back-breaking labor as well.

As a young man, he was a Sergeant first class in the 1st Bn. 116th Armd. Cav of the Idaho National Guard, Howitzer Company, for over seven years. He also led his high school as a member of the P Club and later as Associated student body president in 1948. Just last fall, his graduating class of "48" reveled in a reunion of 61 years of memories at Don and Mary's home. Don always enjoyed holiday gatherings with family and celebrating the Fourth of July at the family cabin on the lake in McCall. He was a life-long member of the Ontario Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1690 and participated in many of their philanthropic projects.

As a very social guy, his high school yearbook saying as a senior was, "Us men have to stick together!" To emphasize that, he enjoyed Alaskan Fishing Trips and coffee with the "guys" at Meechan's, a local "hot spot," Burger King or the golf course. As one condolence said, "He crossed the generations of our family as a friend." He developed many strong lifelong friends.

He was a lifelong member of the Payette First United Methodist Church, which he and his father built. Don married Pat Wilson in 1948, and from this union came two children, Karen (Gary) and Dennis (Debi). They were later divorced. In 1968, Don and Wilma Conner were married. She brought three children to the marriage, Diana, Dan and Mike (Kelly). Wilma died in 2006, after 38 years together. Soon after, he found a wonderful woman to be at his side in the form of MARY MASTERSON, and they were married May 3, 2008.

She survives him. Mary has three children, Ken (Kathi), Polly (Jeff) and Keith (Leslie), and five grandchildren, Derek, Toni, Brittany, Kathie and Freddy. He is also survived by grandchildren, Patty, Gary, Stephanie, Danielle, Grant, Joe, and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Cody, Justin, Ryder, Layne, Keya, Bailey and Blake. Other family includes a brother, Bob (Anne); nephews, Christopher and Eric; three special aunts, Billie Kennard, Ilene Higbee and Jackie Fretwell; and many cousins and other family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerry DeBord; mother, Mary DeBord; brother, Jimmy; and maternal grandparents, Everett and Josie Fretwell.

Flowers may be sent to Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel in Payette. Donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research or Scotch Pines Golf Course or your favorite charity in Don's name, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661.
