WILTON, IOWA — Charles W. Brenner, 82, of Wilton, died on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 30, 2009, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Reverend Tom Zeleny will officiate.Casket bearers will include Mark Brenner, Brian Brenner, Dan Brenner, Gary Cook, Dick Cram, Marty Ruwe and Doug Nauman. Interment will take place at the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton, where American Legion Post No. 584 will conduct military honors.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Wilton American Legion in his memory.

Charles was born on July 26, 1926, to William and Bessie Duncan Brenner in Wilton. He married Verlene Mae Pontow on May 10, 1951, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on March 20, 1994.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a retired union plumber, working at Monsanto in Muscatine through Ragan Mechanical of Davenport.

He was 60-year member of Wilton American Legion Post 584 and the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Locals 387 and 25, Davenport, IA.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending many hours visiting with friends and family in his garage. He smoked many turkeys and shared them with his friends and even his doctors. He was well know for his quick wit and the many stories he loved to share.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, James "Jess" Brenner and wife, Barbara, of Durant; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ellis of Tuscon, Arizona, Martha Bylena of Phoenix, Arizona, and Laura Miller and husband, Donald, of Davenport; and brother, Lester Brenner of Wilton.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Stella Maher; and brothers Robert and Kenneth Brenner.
