My grandmother was named for her mother Bertha Rice.
She was the third child born to John Rice and Sarah France from Kansas. They all came to Texas about 1873 and settled around Denton County for awhile. 1879 they moved on to Baird in Callahan County near Belle Plains. Great Mimmie as we called her went to school graduating in Baird. Her father John Rice was in the freighting business in Ft Worth and gone allot taking care of business to provide for his family. Here in Baird is where she and William Grant met and married when she was 18 years old and began their large family of children.
I was fortunate enough to know my Great Mimmie and adored her and her stories of the family. She especially inspired me to learn the piano and one of my favorite things to do at their lovely home was swinging in this awesome old large tree in their back yard. I remember many great times visiting.
