Charles is a Civil War veteran, he served with the 8th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry Company F (Evanston Dragoons) from Cook and Will Counties. Charles Date of Muster Feb 29, 1864, Mustered out July 17, 1865.

Charles Holmes parents John & Mary (Furze)Holmes came to America from England in 1832 and made a home in Onondaga Co., New York. It is the place Charles was born in 1843.
Soon after the family set out for the west after 1843 with horse and wagon, as they made a home in Bloom township, Will Co., IL., as the 1860 census and plat maps shows.
After the war Charles Holmes went further west to Kansas along with his brother Joseph.
It is there, Wichita, Sedgwick, County Kansas, that Charles Holmes married Adline Emily Crout on 17 April, 1871. To this union two daughters born, Emma born 1872 in Kansas and Rena May born 1874 in Wisconsin. Sometime between they moved to Wisconsin. It is on 18th Feb., 1875 Charles wife Emily died leaving a husband and to daughters to morn her.
Charles after married on Dec. 14, 1875 in Adams County Wisconsin, Rosylla Lucinda Emmes. To this union seven children were born, two dying in infancy.
Charles Mathew Holmes died 17 Feb., 1893 in Adams County Wisconsin of complications of pneumonia.
