On October 24, 1862, William enlisted in the 13th Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery, and he gave his age as 23 years. The Civil War took him to Louisiana. He was discharged there on July 12, 1865.
He boarded with his future in-laws, the Hurst's. On Dec. 10, 1865, he married Laura Buckley Hurst in New Orleans, LA.
He was also a policeman in New Orleans right after the Civil War and was shot in the line of duty on Feb. 1, 1870, but recovered. He was listed as a detective in the 1890s, New Orleans.
On October 30, 1906, William entered the US Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio. On January 19, 1909, he died at US Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio and is buried there.
