She was born on November 28, 1923 in Wellsville, Ohio to Charles McKinley and Ollie Byrley Branscum. Susan attended school in Wellsville until the 9th grade when she moved to College Corner to take care of her grandmother. While in College Corner, she met and later married Enoch Smith. She had held several retail positions in Connersville thought out the years and ended her working career as a supervisor at Landmark Center in 1982. In the early 1980's she earned her GED. She had been a member The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Connersville Ward since 1978. Susan hosted the Conner Quilters and was a charter member.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Shirley and Claude Counceller of Connersville; two sons and daughters-in-law: Enoch and Kaye Smith of Springfield, Illinois; Randy and Rita Smith of Connersville; a step-daughter: Sandra Jo Feldman and her husband John of Florida, a brother: Clinton Branscum of Loraine, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents; first husband: Enoch Smith who died in 1975; second husband: Oral Spivey, who died in 1996; four sisters: Lucy Mae Barnett, Juanita Towne, Pauline Lowe, and her twin Palestine Branscum who died as an infant; two brothers: Charles Bransum, and Harold Branscum; two sons: Darrell Smith and Donald Dean Smith who died as an infant; a daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and Larry Pollard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Connersville Ward officiating. Interment will follow in College Corner Cemetery in West College Corner.
