Archange Robidoux was born 28 Feb 1805 in Sandwich, Essex, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Jean Baptiste Robidoux and Mary Josephte Vermet. Her mother died very young and her father married her mother's sister, Marie Rose "Rosalie" Vermet. who raised her and her brother, Laurent, as her own.
Archange married Nehemiah Bates by 1827. They had 3 daughters, two of whom lived to adulthood-Elizabeth and Julia Ann. Nehemiah died on 12 May 1835, leaving her with 2 small children and a store to run. She married Robert B. McDowell on 12 Sep 1835 at Grace Episcopal, St. Louis, Missouri. They lived in Galena, Illinois where they ran the store and raised her daughters and 5 more children: John, Robert, Emilie, Rosalie and Mary. They later had a store in St. Louis and after that lived in Keokuk, Iowa. Robert was killed by Indians while fishing in a canyon in 1860. Archange is buried next to her son, Robert.
