John was the last of 6 children (3rd son) born to William Clark (1788-1881) and his 1st wife Lucenda Felt (1789-1836). John's siblings were: William (1815-1896), Jacob Lorenzo (1817-1892), Lucy (b. 1820-1882), Mary (1825-1877), and Cynthia (1827-1857).

John married in Whitehall, Washington County, New York, 1852, Deborah Wilson (1831-1906)

John was the Postmaster in Whitehall for a number of years.
