William E. Truitt, 86, of Sterling, passed away Friday, April 18, 2008 in Sterling. A private family inurnment will be held.

Bill was born April 4, 1922, to Helen Brown and William J. Truitt in Sterling. He graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1942 in Boise, Idaho. He was discharged in New Orleans in November 1945 at the rank of Storekeeper First Class.

In Feburary 1948, he married Helen Vandeweghe. She died as the result of an auto accident in February 1975. Bill later married Harriett Sheldon in September 1977.

He served aboard the USS Lyon (AP-71) in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. He was in the invasion of North Africa at Safi, Morocco, and the invasion of Gela, Sicily; Salerno, Italy; and Saint Maxine and San Tropez, southern France. He later received an award from the government of France.

Bill and Harriett traveled the states. Highlights were the reunions of the USS Lyon. They were hosts to the reunion in 1988 at Estes Park.

He owned Truitt Decorating Co., engaged in commercial and industrial paint contracting in the high plains of Colorado and Nebraska. He enjoyed gardening. Bill was a long time member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Elks and a charter member of the World War II Memorial.

He is survived by his wife, Harriett; son, James and wife Vicki of Keller, Texas; daughter, Janelle Dollerschell and husband Joe of Leawood, Kan.; Harriett's children, Cherylle Wisdom of Broadwater, Neb., Major Wesley Sheldon (retired) and wife Eveyln of Coarse Gold, Calif., Donelle Price and husband Robert of Sterling, Dianne Clark and husband Ron of Wray; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.
