Elizabeth "Lizzie" Osgerby, daughter of John Thomas Osgerby and Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaunt, was the second wife of John Manning, son of Thomas Manning and Sarah "Sallie" Tuttie. Lizzie and John married on May 8, 1895 in East Tawas, Michigan where Lizzie, a teacher, was living with her brother Jabez K. "JK" Osgerby and his family.

Lizzie was thirty-two years younger than John. He was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States in 1851--fourteen years before Lizzie was born. However, the families undoubtedly were acquainted because the Osgerbys had been living in Denmark Township, Tuscola County since 1873, and John had been living in nearby Juniata Township since the late 1850s.

John's first wife was Margaret Mills, who was also born in Ireland. They had three known children:

1) Mills Manning (1858-1883), who married Elizabeth G. Higgins;
2) Nancy Manning (1859-1882), who married John Edgar Besemer;
3) Margaret "Maggie" Manning (1861-1880).

John and Margaret also adopted a fourth child, Addie Manning, who was born in Michigan in 1870. Little is known about her except that she was a member of the Manning household when the 1880 census was taken.

All three of Margaret's children died before she did, and Margaret passed away in Fairgrove, Michigan on December 25, 1894. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Vassar with her children.

Lizzie and John Manning made their home in Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan where John's brother Robert Manning lived. Three children were born to them:

1) Lucile E. Manning (1896-1912);
2) Edna Manning, a twin to Lucile (1896-1896);
3) Thomas W. Manning (1898-?).

Lizzie died of chronic laryngitis and a weak heart on April 11, 1899 and was buried in Sunset View Cemetery, Jonesville, Michigan.

Shortly after Lizzie's death--on September 20, 1899--John married Frances "Fannie" Van Allen, daughter of Pomroy and Caroline Bellamy. The Bellamys were natives of New York where Fannie was born, but had lived in Hillsdale County since the late 1840s.

Fannie had been married twice previously and had five sons. The two youngest, Charles and Clyde Van Allen, made their home with their mother Fannie, their stepfather John, and their step-siblings Lucile and Thomas Manning until after John's death when unfortunate circumstances separated the two families.

On June 2, 1903, John Manning passed away suddenly at the Otis family home in Fairgrove, Michigan, where he, his wife, and family were visiting. John was buried next to his second wife Lizzie in Sunset View Cemetery, Jonesville, Michigan.

After their father's death, Lucile and Thomas remained with their step-mother and her two youngest sons for some time. Although they had been very healthy young children, it soon became obvious that something was amiss; Lucile had sustained back injuries that had made her a hunchback, and Thomas had become mentally disturbed. Neighbors notified one of Lizzie's brothers, J.K. Osgerby, and he and his brother Giles went to Jonesville to remove the children from their step-mother's care and take them home to Vassar, Michigan. J.K. Osgerby also gained control of the John Manning estate.

The doctor who was consulted regarding Lucile's condition suspected that she would not live beyond puberty. Lucille was placed in the Vassar home of Eliza Garner, a spinster who was a first cousin of Lucile's mother Lizzie. When Eliza Garner died on October 6, 1911, Lucile moved in with her uncle and aunt, John J. and Belle (Slafter) Osgerby, who also lived near Vassar. On June 26, 1912, Lucile passed away from pericarditis and pleuritis at Women's Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. She was buried with her parents in Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville.

Thomas's condition was so severe that he was placed in the State Home at Lapeer, Michigan, which was an institution for individuals who were not capable of coping with life in a community. (The name of the home, which closed in 1991, was changed several times.) Although J.K. Osgerby visited him over the years, Thomas never gave a sign of recognition. After the resources from John Manning's estate were depleted, Thomas became a ward of the state. On April 26, 1940 when the residents of the Lapeer State Home in Elba Township, Lapeer County, Michigan were enumerated, Thomas was still institutionalized there. He was 41 years old and had not had any schooling.

To date Thomas's date of death is not known. There is a marker for him on the Manning lot at Sunset View Cemetery, but the date of death has not been filled in.
