He married Leanna Blanche Haines on 18 Apr 1907. She was born 24 Aug 1886 and died 14 Apr 1967. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Andrews, Huntington County, IN.

Joseph and Blanche had three children: (1) Jacob Edwin 29 Sept 1908 - 20 Nov 1975; (2) Edna Marie 25 Aug 1910 - 22 Mar 1989 (married Gustave Sigritz); (3) Eldon Joseph 4 Mar 1912 - 10 Jul 2009.

After Joseph's death, Blanche married Frederick Carl Grossman on 7 Oct 1919.
