Mary Elizabeth was the oldest of 12 children of Matthew and Catherine Washington. According to family records, she was born in 1832, was one of the females living in the house in the 1840 census, and died between 1840 and 1950.

She is probably buried in one of the two graves marked with rocks inside the wrought-iron fence enclosing the Washington Cemetery in Stevenson. The Washington family Bible burned with the house, so no absolute dates can be determined.
