Horace was married three times. First to Hannah Walker in New York, then Mary Lawton Gordon in Michigan, and lastly to Elizabeth Hindley also in Michigan. While his obituary below states he died in Coopersville, he apparently died at his brother's in Ravenna. He was born in 1827 (death certificate is in error) based on all census listings and reports of the time. Per the 1900 census, his birth month was March.

Horace had no children, but raised the children of his second wife as if they were his own.

Death of Former Resident:
Horace Washburn had lived at Coopersville, Mich for over half a century
Mrs. Melissa Smith of West Main Street has been notified of the death of her brother, Horace Thayer Washburn, a native of this town who passed away a few days ago at his home in Coopersvile, Mich, aged 88 years.
Mr. Washburn was born on the Clinton Road about two miles from this village in 1827. His parents were Nehemiah Washburn and Katherine Thayer Washburn, pioneer settlers in this section. Mr. Washburn lived in this section until 1880 when he went to Michigan and took up farming near Cooperville, that being considered the western frontier in those days. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Hannah Walker of Fullerville, who went west with him and died many years ago. His last wife was a Coppersville woman who died four years ago. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Smith of this village, and two brothers, Charles R. Washburn of Coopersville, Mich., and Levi Washburn of Ravanna, Mich also several nieces and nephews in this village and section. Burial was made in Coopersville besides his wives.
