Enlisted in company H. Forty-fourth Illinois Infantry, Aug 1 1861, at Kalamazoo, for 3 years, age 34. Mustered Sept. 12 1861. Mustered out at Camp Irwin, Tex., Sept. 25 1865. [Record of service of Michigan volunteers in the Civil War, 1861-1865]

Gideon Mattison.
SCOTTS, Mich., Oct 1.— (Special)— Gideon Mattison died at his old home in Brady Sept. 21st, aged 68 years. He was born at Shaftsbury, Vt., was united in marriage to Sarah Olds Sept. 24, 1863. This union was blessed with three children, one son and two daughters, one son and one daughter residing in Idaho. Deceased entered the army Aug. 9, 1861, as a private in Co. H, 4th Illinois infantry; served two years and eight days and was in the battle of Stone River and several other engagements. He joined. Walter Orr post, G. A. R., No. 312, of Scotts as charter member June 9, 1885. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. H. Reiter of Vicksburg. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph October 1, 1895 page 1
