My mom, nephew and I were riding the Grand Avenue bus down to Navy Pier in Chicago when a woman got on carrying a cardboard box. The box held some sort of animal and, after she sat down, the nonstop mewing began. Despite repeated reminders from my mom that we already had two cats to care for at home, my nephew got up to investigate. The woman explained that she was on her way to the Anti Cruelty Society to surrender "Snowball." She opened the box and out popped an all white, shorthair cat with dazzling green eyes. Rather than risk having him euthanized at the shelter or living his life with such a ridiculous name, we adopted him at once. Despite the woman's assurances that she fed him right before she left her house, our new feline acquisition -- whom I quickly renamed "Leo" -- ravenously snatched bites of hot dog that my nephew ate while we were at Navy Pier waiting for the bus to take us back home.
