"NEW MARKER, PLAQUE IN BEALS CEMETERY

A new memorial marker has been placed in Beals Memorial Cemetery, northeast of Trilla. The marker, which identifies the cemetery, is a memorial to David and Philincy Hayes Beals, founders of Trilla, in 1833. The ground was originally used for a family cemetery. In 1908 additional land was acquired from a grandson, Newton Beals, and his wife, Roselia. Since then it has become a community cemetery. Descendants and friends of those buried there contribute to the upkeep of the cemetery and have donated the marker. The plaque, placed between the graves of David and Philincy, was donated by Mrs. Daisy J. Barger, Trilla. The costs of cleaning and restoring the original grave stones were donated by Mrs. Eva Beals, 1904 Lafayette, Mattoon. Mrs. Beals and Mrs. Barger are fifth and sixth generation granddaughters of David and Philincy. Dedication of the marker and plaque will take place later this year. The cemetery's board of directors include Mrs. Lena Davis, Hugh Nichols and Claude Brady, of Trilla; Clark Thompson and Mrs. Beals of Mattoon; and Austin Nichols, of Lerna."
