Vencil Yuska was born in Bela, region of Chrudim, district of Vysoke Myto, Bohemia, then part of Austria. He was the son of Vit and Katherine (Odehnal) Yuska—spelled Juska in Bohemia. June 20 1870, he, his parents and four other children arrived in New York from Bremen, Germany on the ship, Republic. On the ship's passenger list their destination was shown as Chicago, and they possibly spent some time there with relatives before coming to Tama County. He first settled at LeGrand, Marshall County, Iowa, where he was employed in a stone quarry. Later he worked for the Northwestern Railroad out of Marshalltown.

In 1859 Mary parents located on a farm in Poweshiek County, Iowa, where Mary grew to womanhood. After marriage, Vencil and Mary settled on a farm near Vining in York Township where six sons and four daughters were born. In 1903 the family moved to a farm in Buckingham Township where they resided until 1917 when Vencil and Mary retired and moved to Traer. A son, Frank, took over the family farm.

When Mary died, a widowed daughter, Clara, kept house for Vencil until his death.
