Robert Young was the son of Thomas William Young and Sarah Atkinson and born in London, England. He emigrated to Canada with some brothers and then made his way to Detroit, Michigan. He married Carrie Mohrlok Palmer on September 7, 1918 in Chelsea and became a U.S. citizen in 1921.
He worked for the Packard Motor Car Company for 37 years in Detroit, and retired in 1952. He proudly stated that he "was never late and never missed a day of work."
