John Austin Palmer and his parents and siblings moved several times between New York and Michigan and settled in Michigan in the early 1840s.

He started as a blacksmith as his trade, but enlisted as a private in Company D of the First Michigan Infantry in April 1861 for 3 months. He then reenlisted in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Cavalry in July 1862 for 3 years until the close of the Civil War. The command was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland and John participated in all the battles of his company, i.e. Chicamauga, Stones River, Chattanooga through the Atlanta campaign. After the capitulation, he returned to Tennessee and joined the army under General Thomas in Nashville. Later with his command, he aided in the defeat of General Hood's forces. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, July 1865.
Through his meritorious service and valor on the field of battle, he was promoted multiple times to the rank of First Lieutenant and later brevetted to Captain.
After the Civil War he was a successful businessman in banking and insurance.

His first marriage was to Sarah Jane "Jennie" Townsend in 1866 until her death in 1892. His second marriage was to Carrie Mohrlok in 1893, with his only child born in 1898.
