Sidney and Annie Phillips were likely the first African-American residents of Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. They purchased a 40 acre farm in Section 34 of Union Township in the Rainstown community area. The Jan. 31, 1895 Republican reports "Rainstown - Sidney Phillips (colored) has moved on the Emrich farm." A biography (page 250) of Otis Cullins in the 1976 Hendricks County history records "My father worked at various Hendricks County farms, and so did we boys when we were big enough to handle the work. I was hired out to a Negro farmer, Sidney Phillips, when I was 12 years old (about 1897)".

The 1900 Census shows Sidney (born in Kentucky in May 1864) living in Union Township with wife Anna (born in Tennessee in Oct 1862) with nephew Oliver (age 15) and niece Nelith (age 6). This record shows Sidney and Anna were married in 1882 and had no children of their own. The 1910 Census shows Sidney (age 45) and Annie (age 47) living in Union Township with niece Neta Phillips (age 17). Annie Phillips died in November of 1911. The 1920 Census shows Sidney (age 56) living in Union Township with nephew Reginald Phillips (age 23) and Reginald's wife Solevin (age 22) and son James O. (age 2).

Ancestry.com records seem to indicate Sidney moved to Indianapolis sometime after 1920 and likely died there. This FAG entry is likely for him.
