Transportation, mining, and real estate magnate. Along with his brother Benjamin Holladay, Jesse owned a number of steamers that transported goods up and down the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Oregon. He also invested in a number of mining ventures with his brother, including the Ophir Mine in Nevada's Comstock Lode. Jesse eventually settled in Chicago, where he was a supporter of the arts. He died at his apartment in the Lexington Hotel.
