John and Fayette Darnell were ambushed about five or six miles from Killeen on 9-18-1887. John Darnell and one of his attackers, Newt Blackwell, were killed. Newt Blackwell was the brother of Dock Blackwell, who had been ambushed and killed earlier in 1887.
Other sources including Coryell County court records show that the Darnell and Blackwell families had been involved in a long feud over land, and the Blackwells blamed the Darnells for their brother's death.
Court records indicate that Clint and Fayette Darnell were eventually indicted for the murder of Dock Blackwell but, neither were convicted.
