In the name of God, Amen, I, Lydia Hornbeck, of the County of Randolph and State of Virginia, being of sound and disposing memory and believing according to the course of nature that I must in a short time be called from this world of mortality and being desiurous to disposing such worldly things as it has pleased Gto bestow upon me do make and publish this as my last Will and Testament revoking all other Will and Testaments codicils heretofore made by me.
FIRST: I desire all my just debts and funeral expenses should be paid off so soon as may be convenient after my Decease that after the payment of said debts and funeral expenses I will and devise and direct to be equally divided between my four daughters (That is to say Sarah Channell, Polly Wood, Ann Carr, Susannah Slagle). It is my wish and intention to give to my said daughters all my property not otherwise by me disposed of after paying my Debts and funeral expenses and the legacies hereinafter named.
ITEM: I give and bequeath to my grandson David Carr one cow to be as good or an average cow out of such as I may have at the time of my decease.
ITEM: I give and bequeath to each of my grandchildren hereinafter named the Sum of Two Dollars and fifty cents that is to say: Lydia Hornbeck, Lydia Hathaway, Lydia Hornbeck daughter of Joseph, Lydia Hornbeck daughter of Moses, Lydia Hornbeck daughter of William, Lydia Slagle, and should there be any other of my grandaughters named after me which I have omitted to name I will allow to each the sum of Two Dollars and fifty cents which I desire should be laid out on the purchse of a Dress.
ITEM: I give and bequeath that my two Black Boys Jackson and Washington children of my Blackwoman Jane shall be bound out by my Executor to some suitable and proper person or persons to have a trade if convenient. I desire that their mother Jane, should select the person or persons to whom they should be bound anbd that my said black boys above named Jackson and Washington be bound to such person as may be selected to serve as apprentice until they arrive to the age of Twenty one years at which time I give and bequeath to them their freedom and release them from Bondage or further servitude as slaves. I also will and direct that the person or persons to whom my said Black boys may be Bound shall be required to pay to each of said boys Jackson and Washington the sum of fifty dollars at the time they or either of them arrives to the age of Twenty one years of age at which time they are hereby directed to be Emancipated and set at Liberty. But should no suitable person be willing to take said boys Jackson and Washington as apprentices and pay the sum of fifty dollars when they arrive to the age of twenty one years they are still to be bound out until they arrive to that age by my Executor.
Lastly I do hereby appoint my friend Abraham Carper my Executor of this my last and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 28th day of March, A.D. 1838.
