Moses Hornbeck was the son of Benjamin Hornbeck, early settler to Randolph County, WV, and his 2nd wife, Lydia Currence. Moses Hornbeck Senior married about 1817 to Mary Light (born 1797) who was a daughter of John Light. (Family Tradition Burial: Gnatty Creek Cem., Marion Co., WV, along with children who died young.)

Their children were: Elizabeth (1814–1897, m. 1832 m. Michael Montgomery), Lydia (1818–1875, m. 1836 John Boyles), James Frank (1825–1888, h/o Deborah Squires), Nancy (1826–1895, m. 1857 John Kittle), Lettice Hewitt (1828-1909, m. 1857 Marshal L. Slaughter), Benjamin C. (1832–1911,(h/o Mary Lanham), and William Henry (1835–1903, h/o Frances Woods) - HORNBECK.
