Melissa Sampson, daughter of Aquilla and Eliza Sampson, was born near Adelphia, Polk county, Iowa, February 19, 1857. The thread of this life was lengthened out to 75 years 8 months and 12 days.
On July 9, 1876, she was united in marriage to John W. Carpenter. In 1879 they moved to Nebraska and in 1882 moved to Mashall county Kansas where they lived until December 1900 when they came to Republic county Kansas where she has since resided.
To this union were born nine children. Her husband passed away on May 9, 1924, and one daughter Dallie, September 20, 1907. Those left to mourn her departure are four sons, William A., Bert W., and Harley W., of Munden and Jess J. of Superior, Neb., and four daughters, Mrs. Esta Masten, Hubbell, Neb., Mrs. Rena Jenkins, Chester, Neb., and Ada and Harriett of Munden; also 10 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Laura Carpenter, Rapillion, Neb., and 3 nieces and 3 nephews.
She was a kind and loving mother, always noble and true and her life was an inspiration to her family and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M. E. church in Munden with the Rev. Harry Riley in charge. Interment was made in the Ida cemetery.
