Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. He was a Sergeant Major in the 17th Lancers. At Balaklava on October 26, 1854 - one day after participating in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade - Wooden and surgeon James Mouat took part in the rescue of a Lieutenant-Colonel Morris, who was lying seriously wounded in an exposed position. They were instrumental in saving the officer's life, helping to dress his wounds under enemy fire. Wooden was also awarded with the Crimea Medal, Turkish Medal, French War Medal and the Indian Mutiny Medal. His Victoria Cross is on display at the The Queen's Royal Lancers Regimental Museum in Lincolnshire, England.
