Agnes was born on her parents' farm in Carroll Township, Tama County, Ia., where she attended a rural school. In 1902 she moved with her parents and family to their Geneseo Township, farm; and 4 years later when her mother died, as the oldest daughter Agnes took over the responsibility of caring for the farm home and the remaining family at the age of 17.
Joseph was born on his parents' farm in Grant Township, the oldest son of Joseph and Mary (Kvidera) Vorba. His early childhood was spent in Woodbury Co. near Sioux City, where he began his education. With his family he returned to Tama Co. and helped on the home farm. In the winter months he continued his schooling, walking miles in all kinds of weather.
When Agnes was 21, she and Joe were married by Rev. Father Joseph Gregor. They began farming in Grant Township, where their son, Leslie, was born, and later purchased a farm in Perry Township, 3 miles southeast of Traer, where they spent the remainder of their married life and where the other five children were born. Aqnes died here at the age of 49 on February 14, 1939, having been in failing health many months from cancer and having suffered a fractured hip almost two years prior to her death. On February 17 services were held at the Vorba home after which the funeral and burial took place at St. Wenceslaus Church and Cemetery, with Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek officiating.
After Agnes's death, Joe continued to farm, even during World War II when all three sons were in active service. After the war Joe, Jr., farmed in partnership with his father from 1946 to 1961. In 1960 an accident caused serious and near fatal injury to Joe, Sr. He died in Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Dysart, Ia., on December 7, 1970, where he had been a patient for five years, and was buried at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery near Clutier, Ia.
