A descendant, John Hobson Alvis, wrote in 1976: "Abner came to west Walker County, Alabama, at Pocahontas, Alabama, entered a section of land made tax records. ....He reared his family as listed below. At his later years in life, he would sit under a big apple tree watching the family work in the field. His request was when he died he wanted to be buried under that apple tree. That made his grave the No 1 grave in the Pocahontas Alabama Graveyard."
