ARTHUR N. MILLER’S DEATH A SURPRISE AND SHOCK TO ALL

Former Supervisor of the Town and Popular Citizen Was a Candidate for Sheriff –
Was Apparently Well Last Evening.

Although he attended the fair yesterday afternoon and was conversing with friends on State street last night at 9:30 o’clock, former Supervisor Arthur N. Miller of 615 North Aurora street, candidate for the nomination of sheriff on the Republican ticket, was dead at midnight.

Mr. Miller’s death was very unexpected. He suffered from a slight attack of grip last week, but his general health had been good. He was up-town for a short time last night and upon his return home, a few minutes before 10 o’clock, he said he was tired and was going to bed. Mrs. Miller retired a few minutes later but was unable to sleep soundly. Shortly before midnight she heard her husband arise. Then she heard him fall to the floor. Mrs. Miller was at her husband’s side in a few seconds. He was unconscious and she administered such restoratives as she had. When he failed to regain consciousness in a few minutes she awakened other members of the family and a physician was summoned. The physician arrived in a few minutes and after a brief examination said that Mr. Miller was dead. Death was probably due to heart trouble.

Mr. Miller’s Career.

Arthur N. Miller was 54 years old. He was a painter by trade and at the time of his death was foreman of the Ithaca Traction Company’s paint shop. He was widely known in this city and county and represented the Fourth Ward on the Board of Supervisors from 1904 to 1907, inclusive. He served as chairman of the good roads committee of that body and let the contract for the first macadam road constructed in this county. The macadam road from Percy Field to the corner of the lake was constructed under Mr. Miller’s personal direction in 1906, the job being completed within the contract price, and Mr. Miller was always proud of the fact that that particular highway has stood up better than many of the macadam roads in the county built years later.

Was a Candidate for Sheriff.

Several months ago Mr. Miller announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff and he already had more than 400 signatures on his petition. He was a life long resident of this city.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Herman Lynch of this city. He is also survived by three brothers, Ransford of Seoul, Korea, Charles of Chicago, and Albert Miller of this city; and one sister, Mrs. John Crawford, also of Ithaca.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the family residence, the Rev. A.R. Lambert officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery.
