George M. Buchanan was the son of William and Mary Ann Long Buchanan. He was one of four children and grew up on the family farm in Rome City, Indiana.

George M. Buchanan married Nellie Maude Kesler, also of Rome City in Wolcottville, Indiana. The marriage license was registered on March 3, 1896. The couple made their home locally, close to the Kesler family. Nellie had a son, Lloyd Sheldon and daughter, Hazel Lucile.

George lost his wife, Nellie, age 24, in 1905, to a tubular pregnancy and gave their two young children to his mother-in-law Ada Kesler to raise. (A third child Theodora was deceased) Ada's youngest daughter was born the same year as George's daughter Hazel, so the three youngsters were raised as siblings.

George married a second time, on July 1, 1908, to Mable Mae Fisher 1882-1970
