When John was in the 1st grade, the Edgewood Grade School, his teacher asked the class what they had for breakfast. John held up his hand and when called upon, he proudly stated that he had bug's and rice for breakfast.
After school was done for the day the teacher was concerned about what her student John Ward has said. She went to visit John's parents. She knocked on the door and Mom (Stella Fryman Ward answered the door. After Mom knew who she was invited her into her home. the teacher stated that she would like to discuss what John had for breakfast. He said that he had
bugs and rice. Mom said yes that was true with a smile on her face. The teacher asked what is bugs and rice. Mom chuckled and said that her kids called raisins and rice as the raisins looked like bugs. The teacher thanked Mom and left without another word.
John Lawrence WARD Sr. had a hard time in school. He was held back at least 1-2 times. When he was 16 he quit school.
John had difficulty with school. He went until he was 16 years old and then started to work.
Since he could not read and write well it was difficult for him to get some of the better paying jobs. His 2nd wife Margaret help him out when he was working as the lead in a position in manufacturing. He would bring home his paper work and she along with John would look over the papers and thus he maintained this job for a while. John was good at mechanical and repair. His last position was in a hospital in Chicago and everyone seemed to like him. He worked their until his death.
