Refer to her husband's page for a picture of their log cabin homeplace in
Mathias, WV. It was built about 1797: the northernmost section was the
original. At or around the time when the second part was built, porches and a
breezeway were added to connect the halves. It remained in the Mathias family
until 1974 when it was deeded to the Mathias Civic Center Association by Wendall
Mathias. And then on 11/24/1978, it was listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.

Barbara's father, Joseph Dispanet, escaped a Shawnee massacre, under Chief
Killbuck, at their homestead in Mountain Falls, Frederick County, VA in 1756.
Her grandparents, Johann Jacob and Mary Barnet Dispanet were killed, along with
their 3 daughters, Faith, Hope & Love. Joseph's 2 brothers, John Barnet Dispanet
& Christopher also escaped. The 3 boys hid in shocks of grain. This took place
on the Derflinger property (as of March 2016) off Heishman Lane, which is off
Rt. 600 (Back Mountain Road).
