The 1850 US Census says that Enoch was born in NY and was 85, making his birth sometime between 1 June 1764 and 1 June 1765. Death record in 1851 says that he was born in Stratford (NJ?) and was 87, giving him a birthdate between 10 July 1863 and 10 Jul 1764. A page from Enoch's account book (found in his pension file), written in his hand, says that he was born 21 Jan 1765.
Enoch enlisted in the military in Norwalk CT and served 7 months as a private in Norwalk County and in Westchester County NY. Levi says that he enlisted in late March or early April; Enoch says April without giving a date.
Enoch says that he was living with his grandfather John Benedict when Jesse was first in the army. Jesse served in Norwalk 1 Oct 1776 to 1 Apr 1777.
Acquaintance Elijah Sherman, who knew Enoch Hayes more than 40 years, said, "he was a reputable man of fair character."
Levi says that Enoch and his family moved from Monroe to Woodbury, along with Laura's father Cole.
Enoch stated "I was born at South Salem sometimes called New Salem, NY, on the 21 Jan 1765 and lived with my grandfather John Benedict at Norwalk, CT, until I entered the army." There is no further explanation of when he began to live with his grandfather, how long he lived there, or why.
