ULYSSES GRANT PENICK
Ulysses Grant Penick, eldest of three children of John Franklin and Diana Westfall Penick, was born Dec. 14, 1863 near Eddyville, Iowa, and departed this life at his home in Chariton, Aug. 7, 1953.
At 12 years of age he moved with his parents to Lucas county where he grew to manhood. He attended the Warren Center school and a private school in Chariton. On March 24, 1887 he graduated from the Valparaiso Business college in Valparaiso, Ind.
The following May 24, 1887 Miss Maggie Oehlman and U. G. Penick were married. One child, Carmiletta May, was born to gladden their home.
Mr. Penick has spent his youth and adult life in Lucas county. After his marriage he lived on his farm until the spring of 1905, when he moved to Derby to become the cashier of the Derby State Bank, which position he retained for 20 years until his bank merged with the National Bank. He returned to his farm and farming in April, 1925. He retired from farming and moved to Chariton, Feb. 16, 1942, residing here until his death.
Mr. Penick was a member of the Derby Methodist church for over 40 years.
The only near relatives surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Carmiletta May Keast and her husband, Rev. Keast. There are several distant relatives. Mrs. Penick died Jan. 29, 1951.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Derby Methodist church, with the Rev. J. E. Clark officiating. Burial was in the Derby cemetery.
