MRS. J. F. PENICK

Diana, daughter of Lorenzo Dow and Eleanor Westfall, was born near Burlington, Iowa, on February 10, 1843, and died at the home of her son, U. G. Penick, near Derby, Iowa, on January 24, 1931, at the advanced age of 87 years, 11 months and 10 days.

When but a child she moved with her parents to Eddyville, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and on January 22, 1863, she was united in marriage to John Franklin Penick, and for nearly three score years they traveled life's journey together. Mr. Penick passed to the great beyond August 25, 1921.

To them were born three children, Haller, who died in infancy, U. G. Penick, of Derby, Iowa, and W. H. Penick, of Vineland, New Jersey, who survive to mourn the loss of their precious mother.

Mrs. Penick was one of a family of twelve children. Five are living: Allison D. Westfall and Mrs. Margaret Armilda Stodghill, of Portland, Oregon; Julian C. Westfall, of Avery, Iowa; Francis A. Westfall, of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Emma Tedrick, of Los Angeles, California. Besides the immediate family there are three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In 1875, she and her husband came to Lucas county and purchased a farm about three miles from Derby, where they resided the greater part of the active period of their lives, and by industry and frugality, secured the competency and comforts that are the rewards of honest labor.

In later years they retired from the farm and moved to Derby, where Grandma Penick maintained her home after her companion's death, for nearly ten years, until a short time before her decease, she made her home with her son, Grant.

In the winter of 1877, a revival meeting was conducted in Derby by Rev. Daily, a Methodist circuit rider, as they were then designated, and at that time she made a confession of faith in Christ as her personal Savior. She joined the Methodist church at that time and remained in that communion until translated to the Church Triumphant.

Mrs. Penick lived the major part of her life in this community and her life was an open book in her relationship to those with whom she associated. She was known and highly esteemed by a large concourse of neighbors, friends and acquaintances. She had strong convictions of what she conceived to be right and exemplified them in precept and practice.

She was a loyal citizen, a good neighbor, a loving companion and a devoted mother. Although she lived years beyond the allotted time and came to the grave as a shock of corn, ripe in its season, her passing brings a cloud of sorrow to those who are dearest to her, but the blessings she bestowed along life's pathway will be a precious memory.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Miss Ida Roberts, assisted by Rev. W. H. Larrick, and interment was made in the Derby cemetery.
