David Fussell first came to Iowa in 1844, and worked at many farming and general labor jobs. In 1845, he was working in Linn County and is known to have had a relationship with a young girl named Rebecca Whitlatch. This short lived relationship later produced a child named Sarah born on February 14, 1846. Shortly after meeting Rebecca Whitlatch, David Fussell returned to Ohio not knowing that he would soon be a father.

In March 1846, he married a girl named Rachel Jennings, and in 1849, he returned to Iowa to reside in Fayette County with his new wife. David's father William Fussell also came to Iowa and bought land in Fayette County. Soon afterward this land was sold to David Fussell.
