I first began doing some family history research with my father in the 1990's. We didn't know anything of our family history, but we soon learned that our ancestor Henry Matthias served in the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. After getting his records from the National Archives, and after reading his records, as well as many long talks with my father, I learned that our Civil War ancestor was not just a name and a date. He was no longer an "ancestor" but a person with the same loves and wants that anyone has. Although we never met, I can say that I love this man as though I have always known him. I know from his records that his last thought on this earth was of his children, and I like to think that extends to me as well. And today, I call him my grandpa.

MY VIRTUAL CEMETERY...
The 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-1865

The 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers was first organized on July 31, 1861 upon the commissioning of Jacob Miller Campbell, of Johnstown, Cambria County, as the Colonel of the regiment by Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin. Four very bloody years later, the regiment was mustered out on July 15, 1865 at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

There were about 1,550 men that served in the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers from 1861 - 1865, and I have found the gravesites of over 1,300 soldiers of this regiment, including some that have been Missing In Action since the war. Unfortunately, there are many that will never be found.

I consider myself a historian of the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers and have researched this regiment for nearly 20 years. I have also been in contact with many descendants of these men.

Please give me a shout, if you have a question about ANY of the men listed.
