Botanist, Nephew of Ezra Cornell, Dies In Chicago Hospital
Dr. Charles Frederick Millspaugh, well known botanist, and former resident of this city, died in the Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Ill., Saturday night, following several weeks’ illness of pneumonia. He was 69 years of age, and had been curator of the department of botany at the Field Museum since 1893.
Dr. Millspaugh was born in Ithaca, the son of John Hill Millspaugh, famous etcher, and nephew of Ezra Cornell, the founder of the university. He was educated at Cornell, a member of the class of 1875, and at the New York Homeopathic College, where he took the M.D. degree in 1881.
Dr. Millspaugh was at one time train dispatcher for the Ithaca and Athens Railroad in this city. With William G. King of Chicago he also helped in building the first private telegraph line in Ithaca – from Professor Anthony’s home at Judd’s Falls to the university, the Western Union office, Williams Brothers, and Mr. King’s residence on West Buffalo street.
