"Guss" T. Burge was born in 1868 to Robert W. and Elizabeth Moorefield Burge. He married Alice Tuttle (b. 1871) the daughter of "Red" Jeff and Sarah Tuttle. Guss owned a farm on the Walnut Cover, Germantown Road looking over the upland and bottomland of Townfork Creek between Rosebud Church and the RJR Brookcove Plant. About 1918, the county decided to build an improved sand clay road from Walnut Cover to Germantown and charged a bridge tax. Being upset over this, in 1919 Guss purchased a 250 acre farm 3 miles below Archdale on the High Point - Archdale Road and moved the family there. In 1926, he developed a small part of the farm and sold building lots for more than he had paid for the entire farm. Guss and Alice had 13 children: Mary Magdalene, Stella, Macy Lewall "Maggie", Etta, James H., Robert. J., Roy Oliver, Charles C., Gilmer, William Preston, Carson A., Gorrell A.and Kermon Lester. Stella and Lester lived in High Point and Lester became a minor league baseball player with an outstanding record. Guss died in 1946 and Alice in 1948. Both are buried at Rosebud Church Cemetery (Walnut Cove, NC).

Mary Burge, the oldest daughter of Guss and Alice, was born in 1893. She married A.J. (Bud) Long, son of John H. and Martha Petree Long of Tobaccoville (the Old Richmond area). Mary Burge and A. J. Long were the parents of three sons and one daughter. In 1931, when giving birth, Mary, along with the baby girl died. Their sons were Dewey A., Launie M. and Arthur Burge Long. A.J. Long died in 1956. (source: family knowledge and records - Dewey Long)
