The Burges were tobacco farmers, so Gilmer Wade Burge grew up on a farm. The farm was on the Walnut Cove-Germanton Road overlooking the upland and bottomland of Town Fork Creek between Rosebud Christian Church and what is now the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Brookcove Plant.
Around 1918, Stokes County built an improved sand clay road from Walnut Cove to Germanton and the county started charging a bridge tax. Being upset over this, Gilmer's father purchased, in 1919, a 250-acre farm in Randolph County three miles below Archdale on the High Point-Archdale Road (at 10106 South Main Street in Archdale, North Carolina, where Lowe's Food Store is located (2017)) and moved his family there.
In 1926, Gilmer's dad developed a small part of the farm and sold building lots for more than he had paid for the farm. He was "manager" of a baseball team, made up of his sons, which played local teams around town and teams in surrounding towns.
