John T. Glenn was a leading member of the bar of Atlanta and a prominent citizen in the city as well as the state of Georgia. Glenn was inaugurated mayor of Atlanta in January 1889. He died very suddenly, leaving a wife, the former Helen Gerrard, and four children, Miss Helen Glenn, Willie Lewis Glenn, Miss Isa Glenn, and Gerrard Glenn. In deference to his death, all courts were adjourned and public schools closed at 1 o'clock. Even the city departments were closed during the funeral so that the city council and board of aldermen could attend.
